Opposition From Family Members

When you make the decision to go plant based, you are likely to experience some pushback from your family members who have not made the change. In general, people are afraid of change – more than that, your very decision to go plant based is confronting long held traditional eating that your family still holds dear.

Generally, if you have gone vegan you are passionate about animals, the planet or your own health. Your passion about these topics may fuel you to want to educate everyone around you – and at that very moment where you want to scream from the mountain tops about all you have learned — you should reassess the best way to effectively communicate with your loved ones.

Try to remember how you felt when you ate animal products — the words “I love animals” probably escaped your mouth as you were having a BLT lunch with your friends and family. You probably really did love animals and simply weren’t aware of the part you were playing in their suffering.

In your approach to family and friends, have compassion that you are asking them to make a big change in the way they think. You are asking them to accept that they have been lied to their entire lives about where their food comes from, you are asking them to accept that they have taken part and supported outright animal cruelty.

Rather than attacking them, or responding in an angry manner when they make silly jokes about your plant based choices — simply tell them your story. Explain how you came to your decision. Lead with the fact that you were just like them in the not so far distant past and follow up with how you found the courage to face the truth.

The most important thing you can do for the animals is to be an effective advocate on their behalf – because they have no voice. As angry as you are about their suffering, pointing the finger at others is not going to win them over. If you are strong enough to maintain a plant based diet — you are also strong enough to effectively advocate for animals and not just be angry at the world.
